Top 5 Reasons to Visit Cairns

Cairns is a major city in Tropical North Queensland that has become a tourist hotspot for very good reasons. Its location provides easy access to some of the most beautiful parts of the Great Barrier Reef, as well as the Atherton Tablelands, and the Daintree Rainforest, amongst many other natural and man-made attractions.

Historically, Cairns was once a sleepy sugar-milling town, but over the years it has grown to become one of the go-to destinations for sailing, diving, snorkelling, hiking, rafting, skydiving, or just exploring.

During the summer months, as the temperatures soar, thousands of tourists pour into the already populous town to sample the many activities available and beautiful scenery of the surrounding beaches and forests.

But what is there to do whilst you are there? Well, here are our top five reasons to visit Cairns for you and your loved one:

Crocodiles are synonymous with Australia, just think Crocodile Dundee, and Cairns has its fair share of crocodile parks and farms for you to visit during your stay.

Cairns’ subtropical climate is perfect for crocodiles, and no trip to the region is complete without taking a closer look at these scaly predators. You can head to Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, in between Cairns and Port Douglas and take their cruise along the croc-infested river where you will see the power of these monstrous beasts first hand as they leap from the water to feed.

If you’ve ever wanted to see these monstrous beasts up close and personal (and safely), Cairns is a good place to visit.

Tjapukai Cultural Park

A 15-minute drive from Cairns will take you to the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, where you can enjoy live performances of music, dance and storytelling, see authentic artefacts once used by the Tjapukai people and view murals created by Tjapukai artists. If you want to envelope yourself in one of the world’s oldest cultures then take part in the Night Fire experience, where you will hear Dreamtime stories and see the lighting of the ceremonial fire before enjoying a traditional meal.

Thrills and Spills

If you are looking for something a bit more exciting from your holiday then Cairns has plenty to offer the adrenaline seeking amongst you. There is skydiving over the beach, bungee jumping and Minjin swinging at the world-famous AJ Hackett Adventure Park in the rainforest, and white water rafting down one of the fastest raging rivers in Australia.

The two standout experiences for adrenaline junkies are traversing the rapids on the gorgeous Tully River which winds its way majestically through the North Queensland hinterland, and the world’s fastest bungee swing at AJ Hackett’s that reaches speeds of up to 120 kilometres an hour.

The Beaches

There are many beautiful beaches in Australia, but with pristine white coral sand and warm turquoise water, there aren’t many more beautiful than the ones found in Cairns.

Our favourite is Palm Cove, a charming seaside village, and home to one of Cairns’ larger beaches. The long stretches of sand offer an ideal location for a spot relaxing in the sun with your loved one. But for those looking for a little more excitement kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving are also available.

The Great Barrier Reef

Our final choice is probably the main reason that most tourists visit Cairns in the first place, the Great Barrier Reef. Cairns is only a short boat ride from what is considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world and as such is an easy access point to the planet’s largest barrier reef.

The reefs’ sheer size and diversity make it a must visit for any one visiting Tropical North Queensland. Head out in a boat and marvel at the crystal-clear water. Go on a diving trip and see the brilliant colours of the coral and fish that call it home.

No visit to Cairns is complete without seeing this magnificent natural structure. A truly once in a lifetime experience.

So, there you have it. Our top five reasons to visit Cairns. I’m sure you will agree it is a magnificent tourist destination that will offer something for everyone.
